There’s no question that Apple MGNV2LLA iPad mini 3 a fantastic tablet. It combines a fast processor and a crisp screen with Apple MGNV2LLA iPad mini 3 easy to use the operating system. It hasn’t made a great leap forward when compared to its predecessor – the only new feature is the fingerprint reader. Before parting with your cash, also consider the larger iPad Air, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and last year’s mini.

It has a dinky 7.9-inch screen which strikes the balance between providing sufficient screen space and being portable enough to carry around with you easily. It’s the most expensive mini available, coming in at £319 for the 16 GB wi-fi only version. If you’d prefer to spend a little less, consider going for the Apple MGNV2LLA iPad mini 3 which is now on sale for £239 or the even cheaper original mini available for £199. The only real difference between this and its predecessor is the addition of the new fingerprint reader. Located on the home button, it allows you to quickly unlock your tablet without the hassle of having to tap in code. Touch ID can also be used to authorize payment of apps, music, and films from the Apple store. We love using this feature on our iPhones, so are glad to see if make an appearance on the iPad too.

Aside from that, it has the same 64-bit A7 processor also found in the previous mini and the original iPad Air. That makes for a speedy tablet that should keep up with anything you have to throw at it. It’s frustrating that this hasn’t had the same processor upgrade as its bigger brother – the iPad Air – but in daily usage, you’re unlikely to notice the difference. It has a crisp 7.9-inch Retina display. That makes text appear just as sharp as it would on the printed page, and it’s ideal for browsing the internet and watching catch-up TV. It also looks punchy and vibrant, even when in bright daylight.

The 1.2Mp front-facing camera is handy for making Skype or Face time calls as well taking the occasional selfie. And the 5 Mp rear-facing snapper takes photos that are bright and sharp with good color. On a full charge, you get just under nine hours and 45 minutes of video playback, or just under nine hours of wi-fi web browsing. It’s not the best battery life we’ve seen from an iPad but does mean that it’ll easily keep going all day without you needing to reach for the charger. As usual with iPads, there’s no micro SD card slot, so you can’t expand the on board storage. There’s no HDMI port either for a simple TV connection.

The Apple operating system doesn’t let you create multiple user accounts – so you can’t separate your apps and content from the rest of the family who may also use the device. Unlike on the Samsung Galaxy models, you can’t split the screen up and have multiple apps running side-by-side. That is disappointing, especially seeing as this is such a handy feature for those who like to work on their tablet.

At the time of the launch, Apple made a fuss over Apple Pay – which lets you authorize payments at shops, cafes, and banks via the secure fingerprint reader. That certainly sounds like an interesting new feature, but there’s no set a date for it to launch in the UK as yet.

For the same price, you could buy the first generation model of the iPad Air. Although it’s a great tablet, aside from the fingerprint reader, it doesn’t offer much more than its predecessor. So if you want the iPad mini, but would like to save a bit of cash, consider the iPad mini two instead.
